Ontario’s healthcare system is in crisis. From overburdened emergency rooms to family doctor shortages, long wait times, and a growing reliance on privatized care, patients and healthcare workers alike are feeling the strain. The upcoming election is a pivotal moment—will we elect leaders who will invest in fixing the system, or will we see further cuts and privatization?
The Reality of Healthcare in Ontario
Hospital ERs Are Overwhelmed
Across Ontario, emergency rooms are closing or experiencing dangerously long wait times due to staffing shortages. Many patients are left waiting hours—or even days—for care, and hallway medicine has become the norm.
Family Doctor Shortages
More than 2.5 million Ontarians don’t have a family doctor, and the number is growing as physicians retire or leave the province. Without primary care, patients end up in overcrowded ERs for basic health concerns.
Privatization & Two-Tier Healthcare
Ontario has quietly expanded for-profit clinics offering surgeries, MRIs, and other procedures. While these clinics promise shorter wait times, they often lead to increased costs, staffing shortages in public hospitals, and a system where wealth determines access to care.
Mental Health & Community Care Gaps
Access to mental health support remains difficult, with many services only available through costly private providers. Community health clinics and social services are underfunded, leaving vulnerable residents without the care they need.
Long-Term Care Failures
The pandemic exposed the weaknesses in Ontario’s long-term care system, yet many seniors and their families still struggle with understaffed homes, high costs, and a lack of home care alternatives.
What Needs to Change?
Ontario’s healthcare system can be improved—but only if leaders make it a priority. Here are key policy solutions to watch for this election:
Fixing the Family Doctor Shortage – Will candidates commit to recruiting and retaining more primary care physicians, especially in underserved areas?
Reducing ER Wait Times – What’s the plan to improve hospital staffing and capacity to prevent closures and overcrowding?
Stopping the Expansion of Private, For-Profit Healthcare – Will candidates protect our public system, or will they continue shifting services to for-profit providers?
Expanding Mental Health & Community Care – How will candidates invest in mental health support and community-based healthcare to prevent unnecessary hospital visits?
Improving Long-Term Care & Home Care – Will Ontario increase funding for safer, more dignified elder care options?
Why This Election Matters
Healthcare is not just a political issue—it’s a personal one. We’ve all seen the impact of the system’s decline, whether through a loved one struggling to access care or our own experiences with long wait times. This election is our chance to demand better.
