Grilled Cheese, Big Crowds, and Local Fun in New Toronto
Get ready, the 8th annual Lakeshore Village Grilled Cheese Challenge returns this Saturday, June 7, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and it’s shaping up to be the biggest one yet.
With an expected 40,000 attendees, this one-day street festival is Ontario’s only grilled cheese competition, bringing together local businesses, food lovers, and sandwich champions from across the province. Stretching along Lake Shore Blvd West between Islington (7th Street) and 2nd Street, the event will feature road closures throughout the day, so plan ahead if you're driving.
There’s something for everyone — live music, kids’ activities, vendor booths, and of course, plenty of cheesy creations to taste. Proceeds will support Women’s Habitat, and the event is hosted by the Lakeshore Village BIA.
Follow the excitement at @grilledcheesechallenge on Instagram or visit www.grilledcheesechallenge.ca for details.
A Message From Our Friends At Etobicoke Climate Action
This year, Toronto is honoured to be North America's host city for World Environment Day. The theme is #BeatPlasticPollution.
Our friends at Live Green Toronto were given very short notice, but have done a great job of arranging for live music by local artists, tasty food, eco-friendly exhibitors, family activities, and a tree giveaway!Hosted by special guest, Candice Batista, eco-expert from The Marilyn Denis Show.
This is a fantastic opportunity for us to show up in droves and show the City and province how much Torontonians care about the environment.
Mark your calendars. If you already have plans, change them. Bring your friends and family, your pets and your pride and let’s push the crowds to fill out not just the park, but the whole area – from Ossington all the way to Bathurst! Put on your eco-bling, break out the swag, and let’s make a huge – HUGE - party of it!Let there be no doubt that the environment is a priority for Toronto!
Let’s Talk Education - A Parent-Led Meeting on TDSB Budget Cuts
Monday June 9
7:00 PM – 8:30 PM
Silverthorn CI Library – 291 Mill Road
Something is shifting in our schools.
Across Etobicoke Centre, parents are seeing it—class sizes creeping up, extracurriculars disappearing, special education supports stretched too thin. These aren't isolated frustrations. They're symptoms of a deeper, more concerning issue: a growing gap between what our schools need and what they’re being given.
And like so many other issues in our city, when systems start to break down, it’s local parents who step up.
That’s why we’re inviting you to join a special meeting on Monday June 9 at 7:00 PM at Silverthorn Collegiate Institute. It’s being organized by local School Council members (who are local parents) who believe it’s time to come together—across schools, across neighbourhoods—to talk openly and honestly about how education funding is failing our kids.
This isn’t a formal TDSB event or a town hall with talking points. It’s a grassroots gathering of parents who care. And we’re fortunate to be joined by two people who know this issue inside and out:
Dan MacLean, our TDSB Trustee, will walk us through the current budget situation—what cuts have already happened and what more may be coming.
Chris Glover, MPP for Spadina–Fort York and former TDSB Trustee for Etobicoke Centre (2010–2018), will provide insight from Queen’s Park, speaking to how decisions at the provincial level are shaping the reality in classrooms across Toronto.
We’ll start with brief updates from both speakers, then open the floor for questions and discussion. There will be time to share concerns, ideas, and—just as importantly—strategies for staying connected and taking action together.
Whether you're a long-time School Council member or a parent just starting to tune in, you’re welcome in this space.
We’re proud Silverthorn CI is hosting this gathering. It’s just one meeting to start with but it’s part of a bigger story—of parents refusing to be silent while public education is devalued.
To RSVP, just reply to this email or email us at TheEtobicokeVoice@gmail.com
Let’s keep building community—and building pressure.
Hope to see you there.
