Last week the City of Toronto held many hours of in-person and virtual budget deputations. The location opportunities crossed the city and some were held right here in Etobicoke at the Civic Centre. All of the work done this month to engage with residents will result in Mayor Chow’s budget that will be revealed on Thursday (Feb 1). However, city work does not stop there and this week we have more committee meetings that may be of interest to you.
Today Planning and Housing is meeting and tomorrow the Executive Committee meets at 9:30 am.

This Week Around Etobicoke:
In-person Affordable Housing Workshop
If you want to know more about affordable housing in our city and specifically about what is going on in South Etobicoke then make a point to join in on this event hosted by LAMP and featuring the work of an Urban Planning TMU student. Also in attendance will be a local Co-Op representative who will be on hand to discuss expansion plans.
Etobicoke Civic Centre Art Gallery
The official launch will be held this coming Saturday (Feb 3) starting at 11 am.
Community Input Needed
“CP Planning is looking to speak to Black and racialized residents of South Etobicoke about their experience as renters or home/condo buyers to access affordable housing. The focus group will identify any barriers, needs and gaps. If you are interested in more information on participation please contact jasmind@lampchc.org
We are looking for a broad cross section of community representation age, culture and lived experience. Selected candidates will receive an honorarium for their participation. CP Planning is working with LAMP to combat racism, increase the supply of affordable housing and support decreasing displacement in South Etobicoke. Through this focus group we aim to identify and address some of the barriers, needs and gaps of residents to access affordable housing, particularly those of racialized populations.”
Local Spotlight - Silverthorn C.I. Robotics Team
This year, students from our local secondary school attending Silverthorn CI have enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to participate in the school's inaugural robotics team. Their dedication is evident as they tirelessly invest extra hours to ensure the success of this exciting venture.
For months, these team members have been diligently working on every facet of the project, from the intricate tasks of building and coding to the essential behind-the-scenes work, such as marketing, website design, general planning, and fundraising. It's important to note that this program is not funded by the board, making it reliant on external support for sustainability.
Recognizing the financial challenges associated with this endeavor, a small and devoted group of parents has been working behind the scenes to address the funding aspect. Sponsorship plays a crucial role in making this program viable and any assistance from our community would be immensely appreciated by all those involved.
As the students balance their preparation for the upcoming competitions with their academic commitments, support from the community becomes even more valuable. If you, or a local business, believe you can contribute to this exciting initiative, please reach out to us here at The Etobicoke Voice. We are more than happy to connect you with the robotics team and school representatives.
Corporate sponsorship offers various levels of involvement and comes with numerous benefits for businesses. In the weeks ahead, we will be closely following the team's journey as they gear up for their first competition in the spring. Your support can make a significant impact on their success, fostering a sense of community collaboration and investment in our students' educational pursuits.
